Piscataway Indian Museum Closing its Doors....

7 women of the Piscataway Conoy Nation will Run the Spartan Race on August 1, 2015 in Charles County, to raise funds for new programs and a traveling presentation of the museum: Living the American Indian Experience.

The Piscataway Indian Museum and Cultural Center located in Waldorf, MD, was created by and for the Piscataway in 1995 and is facing the possibility of closing its doors at this critical time when local Native awareness and interest is on the rise since the Piscataway became Maryland’s first and only state- recognized tribe in 2012. The Cedarville Band of Piscataway Indians’ Museum and Cultural center has partnered with a Piscataway founded arts and technology business, Conoy Creations, to create a cultural arts initiative comprised of a traveling museum, education and entertainment program entitled: Living the American Indian Experience (LAIE ) that provides Maryland’s students, educators, private businesses as well as state and federal agencies, with an engaging and comprehensive 2 hour presentation of local and regional indigenous life.

LAIE will provide community asset building in the creation of impactful jobs to Piscataway tribal members. Supporting a Native mobile program is necessary to preserve cultural arts in a time when museum patronage is dwindling and schools cannot afford or coordinate field trips.

Kimberley Rich, Cryz Nkëchehósi Proctor, Malissa Matthews, Lori McMahon, Brittney Harley and Tribal Chair Natalie Standingontherock Proctor, have accepted the challenge and are training along with other supporters of the museum's new initiatives, to complete the very challenging Spartan Race to raise funds for LAIE. The Spartan Race is to be held on August 1, 2015 in Mechanicsville, MD. The women are running the grueling 3-5 mile, 20 obstacle race under the banner “Piscataway Warriors" and are looking for sponsorship from all Marylanders.
